Split is a city that emerged during the Roman Era and is located 1300 meters above sea level, yet it is close to the sea. It grew around the Diocletian Temple and has written most pages of the history of this great city in Croatia. Diocletian had residence in what today is Split. It was a residence to rest, and was built in 245 b.c. The city began to grow and lay it's first stones on the fortress of this Roman Emperor. Around this residence small towns began to form, mainly by roman soldiers. Little by little it became a city.
In the 7th century with the lcoality of Salone became besieged, many went to live here. The resting place of the emperor went to become the Cathedral of the city and it's main legacy. Split later on fell under the Bizantines, and in the 9th century until the 11th century. Afterwards it went to become of the Venetians from the 15th century until the 18th century.
Of all of the eras, Split has the most world heritage in Croatia. The Cathedral where the mausoleum of the Dicoletian emperor is found, the SV Incola Church and the Od Zvonica, it's museums, galleries, works of art by IVan Mestrovic aroudn teh city, and the textile city of Sinj. All of this is part of the city heritage that kicked out the turks in 1815 and each year celebrates this date.
The historic Center of Split is part of the World Heritage declared so by UNESCO in 1979. |
